Chamblee police said a Ring home security camera helped them catch a suspect who shot at a car multiple times after a traffic accident.
The incident occurred on Jan. 20. Chamblee police stated that at 1:44 a.m., a minor traffic accident occurred at the intersection of Shallowford Road and Dresden Drive, where the victim rear ended the shooting suspect stopped at a red light.
According to investigators, the suspect exited his vehicle and began walking toward the victim’s vehicle. That’s when police say a nearby Ring camera at 2829 Shallowford Road caught the suspect yelling to the victim not to “pull off” multiple times as the victim puts his vehicle in reverse to back away from the scene.
“As the victim’s vehicle drives out of view of the camera, the suspect fires 12 shots at the victim from a 9mm handgun,” said police. “None of the bullets struck the victim, but his vehicle sustained damage from multiple gunshots.”
Using Chamblee Police’s License Plate Reader system, officers of the crime suppression unit assisted in identifying both vehicles involved, stated officials.
“The suspect’s vehicle was located parked in the parking lot of the Quality Inn at 2960 Northeast Expressway,” said police. “A detective identified the room the vehicle was registered to, and a search warrant was obtained for both the room and the vehicle.”
Police stated that after conducting a six-hour surveillance operation at Quality Inn to apprehend the suspect, they arrested suspect Alex Bane as he exited his hotel room on Jan. 23.
Bane has an active arrest warrant for firearms violation out of Pennsylvania. Authorities stated that Bane has been charged with the following and is awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania:
• aggravated assault with a weapon
• criminal damage to property
• possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
• possession of cocaine with intent to distribute
