Basketball: Roswell and Goddard fall in Friday games | Local Sports

Over at the Goddard varsity boys games, the Rockets got beat early in the first quarter. The Bulldogs went on a 15-0 run in the first four minutes of the game, until senior Dominic Ramirez broke the run with a banking layup. After the half, the visitors were up 44-12. The Rockets mustered up 14 more points in the second half, but Artesia put the game away 69-26.

The Lady Coyotes hosted the visiting Clovis Lady Wildcats in a 55-51 loss in the RHS main gym on Friday night. The Lady Wildcats started strong against Roswell. Senior Zarai Lewis scored 15 of her 19 points in the first half, helping Clovis build a 26-18 lead by the end. The Lady Coyotes cranked up the production in the second half, outscoring the visitors 33-29, but fell short. Roswell varsity girls’ head coach Dan Smith said their slow start and defensive shift ultimately hurt them. Smith also said that they struggle to rebound over taller opponents.

“We started off slow at the beginning of the game, and (Lewis) had a few points on us,” Smith said. “We needed to key in on her, and it caused us to switch our defense. I think that made the difference. Otherwise, we played well on defense later on in the game.”
