DEXTER, N.M. (KRQE) – High winds Tuesday caused major problems on New Mexico roads. The Chaves County Sheriff’s Office says all roads going into Dexter and Hagerman including State Road Two were closed.
Winds were gusted nearly seventy per hour leading to brownout conditions. A wall of dust could be seen as people entered Highway 285 obscuring visibility. The sheriff’s office said they are investigating several crashes and that were multiple fatalities.
There was a massive crash on Highway 285 outside of Orchard Park Road that killed 63-year-old David Pedroza. Police say Pedroza hit a trailer being pulled by a truck that was trying to avoid an earlier crash. A passenger in Pedroza’s car was taken to the hospital but their condition is not known.
State Police say a third crash also sent a 15-year-old to the hospital. Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash saying the high winds and limited visibility contributed.
