Lady Coyotes fall to visiting Carlsbad Cavegirls | Local Sports

The Lady Coyotes did not score in the first quarter despite some decent looks in the half-court and transition. When Roswell got their gears going in the second half, they scored seven but remained at a 15-point hole to end the first half.

The third was the Lady Coyotes’ quarter, scoring 21 points to soar the Roswell team within four points of Carlsbad’s lead. Roswell senior guard Sarai Morales scored nine of her 12 points in the third quarter, and junior Bryana Castro scored five of her 10 points. However, the Lady Coyotes could not overtake the Cavegirls in the second half as the visitors sunk 10 of their 12 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to match Roswell’s seven-point production.

Carlsbad’s junior Abbey Dugan sunk 8-10 free throws in the fourth quarter, ending with 18 points to lead the game, followed by sophomore Serena Carrasco with 12 points.

With this loss, the Lady Coyotes stand at 11-13 overall and 1-4 in District 4-5A play, while the Cavegirls improve to 15-10 overall with a 3-2 district record.

The Lady Coyotes will travel to the Clovis Lady Wildcats’ home turf this Friday for the regular season and district finale starting at 7 p.m. The winner of this game will host the other team in the first round of the district tournament next week. Clovis (18-7, 1-4) defeated Roswell in the first matchup on Feb. 9, 55-51.
