Man wanted in connection with recent murder, shot dead by RPD | Local News

No law enforcement officers or civilians were injured in the shooting that happened at 11:20 a.m. Salinas was wanted on charges related to the March 30 killing of Nicolas Montoya, 21.

The press release indicates that moments before Thursday’s shooting, RPD detectives encountered Salinas when they observed him driving south on Sunset Avenue near West Poe Street.

“When detectives attempted to stop Salinas’ vehicle, he sped north on South Sunset at nearly 100 mph before crashing the vehicle into a yard outside apartments on South Sunset a few blocks north of West McGaffey,” the release states.

Salinas, who was allegedly armed, then exited the vehicle and opened fire on the detectives.

According to the press release, the detectives shot back at Salinas, who was struck by gunfire. Salinas ran a short distance to an area between two buildings, where he was later found dead.

The release indicates that New Mexico State Police will investigate the shooting of Salinas.

RPD policy states that the detectives who were at the scene at the time of the shooting will be placed on administrative leave while the investigation takes place.

Following the shooting, an area of South Sunset Avenue in front of Sunset Center was closed off to traffic. As of press time, RPD Public Information Officer Todd Wildermuth said he did not know if that section of road had been reopened to traffic.
