ROSWELL, N.M. – The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau (NMSP) is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the Roswell Police Department (RPD) the morning of April 4.
According to a press release, NMSP agents learned that three RPD detectives were in an unmarked police vehicle actively searching for Javier Harvey Salinas, 27, of Roswell who had existing warrants.
At around 11:17 a.m., detectives were at a stoplight when they recognized Salinas next to them, the press release said. The detectives turned on their emergency lights and attempted a traffic stop, but Salinas drove away, leading them on a brief high-speed chase.
Salinas then crashed into bushes in front of an apartment complex at 1300 Meadow Lane, near the intersection of South Sunset and Meadow Lane. He made a run for the apartment complex and RPD detectives chased him. Next, Salinas pointed a firearm towards the detectives, according to a press release.
Two detectives discharged their duty weapons, hitting Salinas. He was pronounced dead on scene. No officers or bystanders were injured.
Arrest warrants for Salinas issued by RPD were on charges of Murder in the First Degree, Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle, Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Aggravated Assault (3 counts) and Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Assault
