by Fulton Watch News Feed

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – This legislative session, there is an effort at the Roundhouse to give a New Mexico airport funding to host air races. House Bill 245 would allocate $10 million to the Roswell Air Center over four years. The funding would cover construction, repairs, and improvements at the airport “for the purpose of hosting air racing events.”

There is a related companion bill in the Senate this session as well, Senate Bill 199. Roswell is currently one of a handful of locations in the running to host National Championship Air Races. If the funds are approved, they will go toward adding space and utilities for the pilots and their RVs. Updates would also include the addition of a grandstand, fencing, and work on the competition pylons.
