Roswell basketball hosts Clovis in a bid for district title | Local Sports

Taking down Clovis is going to be a tall task for anyone. This year’s Wildcat team is ranked ninth-best in the MaxPreps New Mexico Rankings and seventh in Class 5A. RHS varsity basketball head coach Moses “Dude” Burrola urges the Roswell sports fans to come and support their conquest on Friday.

“I wish we had taken care of business when we were there, but we will solve many issues if we win the game this Friday,” Burrola said. “They’re tough, got some size, and they’re going to come in here ready to play, just like we are. They don’t want to play a district playoff. They want to win the district and a high seed. They’re going to be ready, and it will be a war. I’ve seen good Clovis teams in the past, and this is one of them.”

The two teams have already faced each other once in district play this season, with the Wildcats taking the game 53-47 at Clovis High School on Feb. 9. Clovis will be forced to play a district playoff for the title if the Coyotes take down the Wildcats. Taking the district title from Clovis means solidifying the Coyotes’ state championship spot, and avoiding a possible lower-seed placement. Junior forward Jacob Palomino was absent for most of the basketball season due to injury, but came back just in time to help the Coyotes towards district.
