Roswell to host RHS Quad powerlifting meet this weekend | Local Sports

Roswell had a successful run at state last year with four podium finishes, although a few seniors have graduated. Former Coyote Christian Hernandez, in the 165-pound weight class, currently holds the state squat record for his class at 420 pounds.

The Coyotes have two state champions returning this season: Matthew Castillo in the 114 and Amarante “Bubba” Marrujo in the 123. Castillo holds the state record in deadlift at 355 and total weight at 785. Marrujo holds the bench press record at 195 and total weight at 885. Junior Luis Godoy also competed last year in the 165, placing fourth overall with 1035 total weight.

The Rockets placed a few rungs lower in Class 4A, but had one second-place finish in senior Luis Ortiz in the 181 with a 1,095 total weight. Goddard’s Ivan Adame in the 114 and Gabriel Anaya in the 148 placed fourth. Adame pushed 365 and Anaya had 875. Ben Hester in the 123 and Leo Mendoza in the 165 placed fifth with 645 and 955 weight pushed, respectively.

Goddard had the only state placer in Roswell for girls powerlifting with sophomore Yaretzi Palma in the 132. Palma pushed 625 to place fourth.

Portales boys climbed four steps above Goddard in Class 4A with one state champion and three others that placed fifth or better. Ram’s super heavyweight state champion Nick Lavalle pushed 1240 in last year’s competition.
