New Mexico State Police are investigating a fatal police shooting. It happened on Thursday, April 4 and involved the Roswell Police Department.The suspect is dead after the gunfire was exchanged between him and police. The Roswell police officers who responded to the fatal shooting were not hurt, according to state police. The fatal shooting started after a murder suspect was seen in west Roswell.Roswell detectives saw 27-year-old Javier Salinas Jr. driving near West Poe Street on South Sunset Avenue. Salinas was accused of murder and active warrant was issued the previous day for the shooting death of Nicolas Montoya.When a traffic stop was attempted, Salinas tried to evade police and was traveling around 100 mph. Salinas did end up crashing into a yard near West McGaffey Street.He then left the vehicle and started to shoot at Roswell detectives, who returned gunfire and pursued Salinas on foot. State police said Salinas ran a short distance after being hit with gunfire.Police found Salinas dead between two buildings, according to NMSP.Two other men charged with that murder were arrested the following day after that fatal shooting. Montoya was found shot and killed on Friday, March 29.
