Update: Increased police presence planned this afternoon at Pecos Elementary following lockdown | Local News

Update: (12:16 p.m.) – Law enforcement will be at Pecos Elementary School in larger than usual numbers when students are released this afternoon following an aggravated assault against a teacher outside of the school.

Todd Wildermuth, public information officer with the Roswell Police Department, told the Roswell Daily Record in an email late this morning that they are planning to have an increased presence at the school when students are dismissed after someone pointed a gun at a teacher who was walking into the school early this morning. 

No one was injured, and no shots were fired, but the incident did prompt a lockdown of the school that has since been lifted, Wildermuth said.

He explained that police are also continuing to investigate the aggravated assault.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., a gray SUV reportedly pulled up outside the school located at 600 East Hobbs Street, when a man, who was in the back seat of the vehicle, allegedly pointed a gun at a woman teacher who was walking towards the school. The SUV then drove away.

Wildermuth said that students were beginning to arrive for classes at the time of the incident and that very few were at the school.

Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington said that sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Roswell Police Department and New Mexico State Police were called to the school at about 7:21 a.m. after someone allegedly pulled a gun on a teacher out in the school drop-off lane.
