“DPH is working to identify anyone who may have had contact with the individual while they were infectious,” Nydam said.

According to the DPH, the last reported case of measles in Georgia was in 2020.

Nydam said measles is very contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The measles virus can stay in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person has left the room.

Measles symptoms appear seven to 14 days after contact with the virus and symptoms typically includes high fever, cough, runny nose and watery eyes. A rash of tiny, red spots then breaks out, starting at the head and spreading to the rest of the body, the DPH explained.
