On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Poetry,” Atlanta’s most prolific wordsmiths discuss the art of evoking emotions with words. This “Speaking of Poetry” edition features poet Travis Denton.

“I’d say that my poetry is rooted mainly in memory and place,” said Denton.

“Family members show up a lot in my poems, even the long-gone family members who I’ve never met… the ones who are just stories to me. I’m always trying to understand or even piece together the past.”

Denton also writes about where he’s traveled and who he has met along the way.

Denton got started writing poetry as a child, being raised in a house full of books of poems. His mother would recite Edgar Allen Poe in the house and send him to bed reciting Poe as well.

Denton is currently Associate Director of Poetry at Tech at Georgia Tech. You can find more information about his work here.
