A middle-of-the-night car chase at very high speed ended in a wreck and a trip to jail for a Fayetteville man.

According to a spokesperson for the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, a traffic stop was attempted Feb. 4 at about 1:15 a.m. in the area of Kenwood Road and Kite Lake Road because of speeding. The suspect fled, reaching a speed of 86 miles per hour in a 50-mph zone before continuing down Kenwood Road with no lights on and eventually traveling 115 miles per hour, according to a report.

Near South Kite Lake Road, the suspect entered the curve headed toward New Hope Road and the deputy lost visual briefly but then ran over some vehicle debris. The deputy then looked to the left and saw a vehicle that had just been involved in a rollover crash. The vehicle was lying upside down and smoking, with no one visible inside because airbags had been deployed.

The lone occupant of the vehicle was Karl Scutt, 36, of Fayetteville. He was arrested and charged with fleeing/eluding law enforcement, speeding, reckless driving, a seat belt violation, a headlight violation, and failure to maintain lane. He was not injured in the wreck, although his car was severely damaged according to officials.

Elsewhere in Fayette County, a traffic stop was made Feb. 5 in the area of Hwy. 85 and Banks Crossing. The investigation showed that the suspect was an unlicensed driver and also had an outstanding warrant out of Florida for failure to appear.

A search of the vehicle revealed small bags of suspected marijuana and some drug-related items as well as a Smith & Wesson firearm between the driver’s seat and the front console. A computer check showed that the gun was stolen.

Anquon Axe, 24, of Jonesboro was charged with theft by receiving stolen property, possession/use of drug-related objects and no driver’s license according to the Fayette County Jail log.
