In light of the success of its Commercial Facade Improvement Grant (CFIG) program, Decatur Downtown Development Authority (DDA) recently announced the launch of two new grants programs to assist businesses in downtown Decatur.
Founded in 1982 to implement the Decatur Town Center Plan, the Decatur Downtown Development Authority provides day-to-day management of the city’s downtown development program and now has responsibility for all of Decatur’s commercial districts. It is housed within Decatur’s Community & Economic Development Department.
“Improvements with CFIG grants have added to the appeal of small businesses in Decatur; now we want also to provide financial support to local businesses interested in making interior improvements or enhancing their marketing programs,” explained Shirley Baylis, the city’s business development manager. She said DDA is now accepting applications for its Commercial Buildout Improvement Grant (CBIG) and Marketing and Digital Connectivity Grant (MDCG) programs. She added that funds are still available through the CFIG program, which focuses on enhancing and beautifying storefronts, signage, awnings, and other details that make businesses more appealing to those passing by.
The $50,000 available through CBIG is slated to reinforce the interior aspects of commercial buildings in downtown Decatur, especially retail shops, restaurants, bakeries, and breweries, by repairing walls, constructing new internal spaces, or making HVAC repairs and upgrades, according to DDA.
“These businesses are very important to Decatur as we continue making it a place that’s attractive to both residents and businesses. Decatur is a special place with shops offering unique art and clothing. Our many award-winning and award-nominated restaurants, particularly, are magnets to those throughout the area who enjoy great dining experiences,” Baylis continued. She said both new and existing businesses are eligible for grants.
