Kiss say farewell to live touring, become first US band to go virtual and become digital avatars
On Saturday night, Kiss closed out the final performance of their “The End of the Road” farewell tour at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden. But will it really be the end? During their encore, the band’s current lineup — founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons as well as guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer — transformed themselves into avatars to perform “God Gave Rock and Roll to You.” The cutting-edge technology will be used to tease a new chapter of the rock band. After 50 years of Kiss, the band is now interested in a kind of virtual immortality.
Barbie doll honoring Cherokee Nation leader is met with mixed emotions
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Toy maker Mattel is honoring the late, legendary Cherokee leader Wilma Mankiller with a Barbie doll as part of its “Inspiring Women” series. A ceremony honoring Mankiller’s legacy is set for Dec. 5 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where the tribe is based. Mankiller, who died in 2010, was the first female chief of a major Native American tribe and led the Cherokee Nation from 1985 to 1995. During that time the tribe tripled its enrollment, doubled employment and built new health centers and children’s programs. But not all Cherokee Nation citizens are embracing the idea of honoring Mankiller with a doll. Some Cherokees say she was known for her humility and would not have appreciated a doll with her likeness.
