Fire forces woman from her home | News

A Milledgeville woman was forced from her home by fire Thursday afternoon, local authorities say. No one was injured as a result of the fire, which is believed to have started from a window air conditioning unit in the living room of the woman’s wood-frame home at 1315 North Jefferson Street.

The fire call came out about 4:20 p.m., according to Milledgeville Fire Rescue Services Battalion Chief Rodriguez Warren.

“Dark, black smoke was coming from the house when city firefighters first arrived on the scene,” Warren told The Union-Recorder.

Warren said the woman who lived in the house was actually sitting on her porch when the fire broke out. The on-duty battalion chief said a neighbor alerted the woman that her house was on fire.

Since the city and county officials have a mutual aid agreement and because it was a structure fire, several firefighters from Baldwin County Fire Rescue also responded to the scene and assisted city firefighters. Some 18 city and county firefighters worked together and the fire “was knocked down within 10 minutes,” Warren said.

He said the dwelling was heavily damaged by smoke and water. Warren said the house would likely be declared a total loss.

Warren said he contacted the American Red Cross to provide help for the woman who will now have to seek a new place to live.

Traffic had to be detoured for more than 90 minutes in both directions due to the fire and a subsequent collision between an SUV and a car less than a block away from the house fire. The collision, which was investigated by a trooper with the Georgia State Patrol post in Milledgeville, injured at least two people, authorities said. The accident report was unavailable Friday afternoon.
