Layoffs taking place as Union City FedEx closes

FedEx said a “small percentage of positions” were being reduced, but as of press time, has not confirmed how many people would be losing their jobs.

FedEx is reportedly laying off workers but has yet to confirm if positions in Memphis will be affected.

ABC24 reached out to the company to ask which positions are being reduced aside from their Union City, Georgia facility. As of press time, the company has not provided information aside from this site. They said the issues are unrelated.

FedEx did say they will stop operations in their facility at Union City as they are moving that work to Jackson.

Their full statement on this matter is as follows:

We made the difficult decision to reduce a small percentage of positions as we streamline and realign functions. Decisions of this nature are never made lightly and are the result of much thought and consideration for the needs of our business. We are actively working with those affected by these changes to ensure they have the support they need during this transition.

FedEx Supply Chain provides third-party logistics services for our customers. In most cases, employees are hired to work at a facility in support of a specific customer and, as a result, their employment is subject to changes in FedEx Supply Chain’s business relationship with that customer, such as a customer’s decision to move its operations to a new location or provider. We filed this notice in February, and we informed all affected team members in January.

FedEx also stated that the Union City location is expected to cease operations sometime in Spring 2024.
