The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County (CAC) presents cultural and educational performances to the Douglas County school system each month during the school year, and this March our ARTSventures season continued with two simultaneous programs on March 28. South Douglas Elementary School (SDES) enjoyed Dave Holland’s production of “Hey, What’s that Sound?” with toe-tapping, hand-clapping, drum-banging excitement, while across town Gwendolyn Jackson Napier mesmerized the students at Yeager Middle School (YMS) with “The ABC’s of Story Telling,” her traditional story-telling workshop.

Dave Holland presented a rip-roaring performance about the science behind sound to 1st through 5th grade SDES students, demonstrating concepts such as pitch, frequency, vibrations, and sound waves. Ancient instruments along with live science demos allowed the students to understand how noise is produced with natural and man-made materials. Emily Lightner, Executive Director for the CAC, introduced the performance by reminding kids that science and art are intertwined and essential to each other. After the program she noted, “Everyone was clapping, stomping, and really getting into the performance. Everyone including the teachers.” At one point, Holland activated a loud sound with a piece of metal and then changed pitches by dipping it in and out of water. This, along with his other demonstrations, brought a level of focus and excitement to both the students and teachers, that ranged from complete silence to a cacophony of drumming, clapping and tapping.
