It’s no secret that many local musicians have day jobs, and Atlanta’s neo-funk instrumental outfit Cadillac Jones is no exception.
The band’s bassist, John Renaud, has worked as a lawyer for Turner Classic Movies for over two decades, and recently, his band life and work life collided.
Renauld’s attention was drawn to the TCM podcast “The Plot Thickens: Here Comes Pam,” which explores the life and career of actor Pam Grier, best known for heroic roles in Blaxploitation films like 1973’s “Coffy” and 1974’s “Foxy Brown.”
Noting Cadillac Jones’s cinematic soul vibe, Renauld was asked if some of his band’s music could be used on the podcast’s soundtrack. He agreed, and this contribution was the catalyst for a new Cadillac Jones spin-off project called Foxy Jones.
This new band stars Awleen, best known as the lead singer of the Atlanta rock band The Rack. It is Cadillac’s first venture into adding vocals to their music.
In this interview, managing producer Kim Drobes speaks with Renauld and Awleen to discuss how Foxy Jones is taking cues from the 1970s while leaning into the sound of the Pam Grier canon.
