ATLANTA, GA — State officials announced Thursday who will be leading an investigation into Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and his alleged role in trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia alongside former President Donald Trump.
The Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia said either its executive director, Peter J. Skandalakis, or his designee will oversee any prosecution in the case. One of the two will act as District Attorney Pro Tempore, Atlanta Judicial Circuit, the council said in a news release.
Jones, who was reportedly accused of acting as a fake elector on Trump’s behalf in December 2020, was a Georgia senator at the time.
In a statement secured by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jones said:
“I’m happy to see this process move forward and look forward to the opportunity to get this charade behind me. Fani Willis has made a mockery of this legal process, as she tends to do. I look forward to a quick resolution and moving forward with the business of the state of Georgia.”
The news comes after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was prohibited from investigating Jones in 2022 due to a fundraiser she held for his political rival, the New York Times reported.
However, Willis is moving forward with prosecuting Trump and 18 others in the nationally-watched election subversion case.
Trump was initially charged on suspicion of violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, three counts of solicitation of violation of oath by public officer, conspiracy to commit impersonating a public officer, two counts of first-degree conspiracy to commit forgery, two counts of conspiracy to commit false statements and writings, conspiracy to commit filing false documents, filing false documents and false statements and writings.
