Wake Forest Baseball: Corey Muscara Named 2023 D1Baseball Assistant Coach of the Year

He oversaw the development of a Demon Deacon pitching staff that posted the lowest ERA in the nation.

 

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest baseball’s Corey Muscara has been named D1Baseball’s 2023 Assistant Coach of the Year, the publication announced on Friday. 

 

Muscara played a vital role in the Deacs’ historic 2023 season, which saw Wake Forest set a program record for wins (54) and earn an appearance in the Men’s College World Series for the third time in program history and first since 1955. 

 

Under Muscara, the Wake Forest pitching staff posted the lowest ERA (2.83), WHIP (1.05) and hits-per-nine innings (6.59) in the nation. The team also led the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.26) and strikeouts-per-nine innings (12.1).

 

Additionally, the Demon Deacons led the ACC and finished second nationally in shutouts (10) and walks-per-nine innings (2.83).

 

The four qualified pitchers for the Demon Deacons also recorded the four-lowest ERAs in the ACC in Rhett Lowder (1.87), Sean Sullivan (2.45), Seth Keener (2.69) and Josh Hartle (2.81). Additionally, all four pitchers along with closer Camden Minacci (13 saves, led the ACC) landed on the All-ACC team. 

 

Lowder became the second-highest drafted Wake Forest player in school history, as he was taken seventh overall by the Cincinnati Reds following one of the most dominant pitching seasons in program history. He finished 2023 setting new single-season program records for wins (15), strikeouts (143), and win-loss percentage (15-0). His 15 victories led the nation while ranking fourth nationally in ERA (1.87) and strikeouts (143) and eighth in WHIP (.95). He completed the regular season as the conference’s leader in ERA (1.73), wins (12), innings pitched (88.2) and strikeouts (108).
