Inmate Found Dead By Suicide In Fulton Jail Cell ID’d

ATLANTA, GA — Nearly a week after a Fulton County Jail inmate was stabbed to death Thursday, authorities say another inmate died by suicide Wednesday morning.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said Travis Landrey was found unresponsive in his cell at the Rice Street jail.

Medical and jail staff performed lifesaving measures, but they were unsuccessful, authorities said. Landrey was then pronounced dead, authorities said.

Authorities confirmed to Patch that Landrey was incarcerated at the jail on suspicion of murder, first-degree hijacking a motor vehicle and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies.

Atlanta Police arrested Landrey on Nov. 20, 2023, jail records show. He was from Arnaudville, Louisiana, according to jail records.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy, and Atlanta Police are investigating his death, authorities said.

After numerous deaths at the Fulton County Jail in the past year, it has been the subject of two probes into jail conditions: one initiated by the Georgia Senate and the other conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Lt. Gov. Burt Jones said at an October 2023 news conference the Senate would examine law enforcement actions “on the streets,” court case backlogs and the jail’s overcrowding.

The DOJ’s civil investigation was set to focus on the living conditions, inmate care and use of force at the jail. Justice officials said in a past news release the probe would also examine the jail’s ability to protect people from violence and whether Fulton County and the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office discriminate against people diagnosed with psychiatric…
