Whitney Jones wins District 2 special election runoff | Douglasville Sentinel

Only 475 voters cast ballots on Tuesday. There are 24,031 registered voters in District 2.

It was a 1.98% turnout for the election.

Kenner will fill out the rest of the term left vacant by the retirement of longtime Commissioner Kelly Robinson.

The term ends on Dec. 31, 2024.

The seat has been vacant since Robinson stepped down in mid-November to enter in private business.

“I’m excited to get started to work for the people of the district,” Jones said Wednesday morning via cellphone. “I’m pleased I earned the citizens vote.”

The run-off results are not official until certified by the Board of Elections.

Jones is expected to be sworn-in Friday morning at the courthouse.

While completing the term, Jones will also be campaigning for the May 21 primary election, which will also consist of Hill on the Democratic ticket.

In addition to Jones and Hill, other candidates on the Democratic ticket are Henry Mitchell IV and Ruben Tillman Jr.

The winner will face Republic challenger Melody Wilcox in the November election. Wilcox is the lone Republican candidate.

Jones said despite winning Tuesday’s election, she was back on the campaign trail early Wednesday morning.

“There is no rest,” Jones said. “We will do all we can to get the voters back to the poll in May.”

Early voting for the May 21 primary will run from April 29-May 17.

Hill said he was disappointed in the results, but said he reload for the upcoming primary.
